Something a little different: One Million Lovely Letters

Friday 6 June 2014

This post is very different from what I usually write about, however I believe it is a story too important to go unacknowledged.

Today started like every other. I got up, made my breakfast, opened my computer and looked at the most recent uploads to YouTube in my subscription box. This is a daily ritual that is finely honed. There waiting for me and my cup of coffee is usually a 'get ready with me' video or a vlog, but today there was something different.
The brilliant Carrie Hope Fletcher from It's Way Past My Bedtime on YouTube uploaded a video about a woman named Jodi Ann Bickley.

Jodi Ann Bickley at 22 became seriously ill with a brain infection. In a time of what to me is only unimaginable grief and pain, she thought of others, others who might be struggling, and needed support. Jodi set up a website called One Million Lovely Letters, asking people to write to her with what they were struggling with, and in turn she would write back. This project has now grown immensely and Jodi is receiving letters from all over the world from every kind of person.

I am implore you to watch this Ted Talk. For me it was heartbreaking to acknowledge fully that everyone goes through such dark periods in their lives but it was so inspiring to hear how Jodi has decided to try and help. Everyone goes through struggles whether it is loss, feeling alone, feeling left behind or illness. This is an amazing project and story, so I wanted to share it with you.

What do you guys think about this project? I would love to know :)

  1. Thank you for sharing this, it's absolutely inspiring. She is remarkable for turning her suffering into something so beautiful. It's such a simple human need - to be acknowledged and loved. Yet like Jodi Ann said, there are lost souls and people who just want to be told they matter. It also makes me think of the people around me and wonder if I am acknowledging them, showing them they matter to me. I'm inspired - make an effort to show the people I love that they matter :)

    1. I absolutely agree Alex! One of the major things I always try to do in my life is keep tabs on all my friends and family and make sure they are feeling supported and loved. It's something that doesn't take much time for me but can make such a difference to their day. Thanks for such a a lovely comment,

  3. Thank you for sharing this, I wouldn't have found this speech otherwise. Its such a valuable message that we can easily forget - to look out for our friends, family, strangers also. People need to be cherished and appreciated, and its up to us to remember that. You have a new 'follower' of your blog here :D.
