My Top Five Popular Penguins

Monday 10 November 2014

I am a huge fan of the Popular Penguin books. At five dollars a pop these books are affordable and because they are paperback it makes them really easy to carry around. Whenever I need a new book I usually look in the Penguin Penguins section first. Scattered through my bookshelf are numerous little orange paperbacks so I thought I would share my top five with you.

How I Live Now

This book is one of my absolute favourites and I have read it countless times. I have already written a little review in my holiday reads post, but the basic story line is that the young protagonist Daisy is sent away to live in England with her aunt and cousins after her father gets remarried. She arrives to find a peculiar family and peculiar way of life. She is taken away from urban New York and finds herself in the English Countryside. This book explores love, heartache, shock and struggles.

The Little Prince
This book is simply gorgeous and I find it almost impossible to summarise. I say this because I think each person takes something different from it. Each time I read it I find something new. It is a children's story that explores complex adult behaviour as the little boy leaves his home and travels around the universe. The illustrations are amazing and fit the endearing  nature of the story. I would recommend this to people who are looking for a quick read, and those who love a charming story.

Poems of John Keats

I love this collection of John Keats work. I read this when I need some inspiration. It is amazing to read work that is so lyrical and creative. My favourite section in the book are the Odes.

Breakfast at Tiffany's
I love this book because of the character Holly Golightly. She is unlike any other character I have read and the New York setting adds so much to the feel of the book. I would say that the book is a lot darker than the film. I found the book had more grit than the film and for this reason I like the book better than the film.

Perfume: The Story of  a Murder
This was such a different book for me. I usually stick to lighter stories, but I knew people really loved this book so I had to give it a go, and I am so glad I did. The main character in this novel has an incredible sense of smell and this leads the reader through the story. I love the suspense and passion that this book encompasses.

Have you guys read any of these and if so what do you think of them?
